A Message from the Dean

2nd Century Calligraphy Exhibition · 2026

Dear Students and Calligraphy Enthusiasts,

We warmly invite you to join us for the 2nd Century Calligraphy Exhibition, which will grandly open on Saturday, 10 Jan 2026, at 10:30am! The exhibition will last for three weeks and will be held at 261 Waterloo Street, #01-11, Singapore, 180261.

This year's theme is "Embracing Truth – Upholding Integrity, Realizing Authenticity"!

The featured works are primarily based on the Qinli Stele (Qinli Bei), a late-career masterpiece by the Tang Dynasty calligraphy master Yan Zhenqing. A total of 1,667 characters were meticulously transcribed and interpreted by 52 students. We have chosen the "Yan Style" as our foundational teaching pillar because it perfectly embodies the close connection between calligraphy and personal cultivation, illustrating the noble ideal of "expressing one's aspirations through writing."

This philosophy reinforces our commitment at SG Century Calligraphy Academy. Additionally, the exhibition showcases the Running Script (Xingshu) masterpiece Odes to the Red Cliffsby Zhao Mengfu of the Yuan Dynasty, along with "short-form" works by our new students. As the Founder and Dean, I have also contributed a monumental 4-metre long piece in Yan Zhenqing’s "Broken Style" (Po Ti) calligraphy, titled The Poem of General Pei.

As Yan Zhenqing famously said, "The way of calligraphy lies in the heart." On this path where challenges coexist with creativity, each stroke embodies our emotions and perseverance. Copying master pieces (Lin Tie) is the fundamental practice of calligraphy—it is not merely the imitation of forms, but an exploration of brushwork techniques.

Through continuous practice, we deepen our understanding of the intrinsic meanings in calligraphic works, enhance our appreciation of calligraphic beauty, and cultivate a mastery of Chinese character structure. Every piece in this exhibition is an artistic crystallization of the participants' repeated practice, accumulation, and creative effort.

Systematic Teaching and Personalised Guidance

At SG Century Calligraphy Academy, we employ a unique systematic teaching model. Our instructors move among students to provide personalised feedback, technical guidance, and confidence-building encouragement. We address specific individual challenges to ensure no student feels left behind, allowing everyone to make steady progress.

Our participants range in age from 7 to 88, hailing from Singapore and around the globe. Notable participants include such as Associate Professor Faishal Ibrahim, Senior Parliamentary Secretary Goh Han Yan, Advisor to Aljunied GRC Grassroot Organisations Ms Chan Hui Yuh, and other non-Chinese enthusiasts. As Yan Zhenqing stated, "People have diverse aspirations, but those with a shared purpose will gather." We cherish this diversity and inclusivity, as it represents the profound charm of calligraphic art.

Cultural Heritage and Course Subsidies

Notably, SG Century Calligraphy Academy is proud to be part of Singapore's Cultural Heritage 2.0 initiative and has been recognized as a calligraphy partner for the SG Culture Pass program. To further promote the growth of Chinese culture, the Academy will sponsor $12,000* worth of course vouchers. Through these initiatives, we hope to allow more people to experience the unique beauty of calligraphy.

This calligraphy exhibition is not only about preserving and promoting traditional art but also an invitation to all Singaporeans, including non-Chinese and international enthusiasts, to join us in building a more inclusive calligraphy community. We believe that through continuous practice and commitment, every enthusiast can find their own style and voice within this art form.

Whether you join us in person or via our live stream, we look forward to sharing the emotional depth, historical richness, and cultural warmth of calligraphy with you. We also warmly invite you to sign up for our courses to experience the charm of personalised guidance and begin your own calligraphic journey!

Warm regards,
Ye Jie Jie (Ms)
Founder and Dean
